Oxytocin is a polypeptide hormone composed of 9 amino acids. It is mainly secreted by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland. The main function of oxytocin is to promote uterine smooth muscle contraction for labor and postpartum hemostasis. Oxytocin is also involved in the regulation of milk discharge and social behavior.
