Oxytocin

Basic Description

Structure and function:
Oxytocin is a polypeptide hormone composed of 9 amino acids.
· It is mainly secreted by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary.
The main function of oxytocin is to promote uterine smooth muscle contraction, which is used for labor and postpartum hemostasis.
Oxytocin is also involved in the regulation of milk letdown and social behavior.
In vitro and in vivo studies:
In in vitro experiments, oxytocin can significantly increase the contraction of uterine smooth muscle.
In vivo experiments, oxytocin can effectively promote labor and postpartum uterine contractions and reduce bleeding.
In clinical applications, oxytocin is used to induce and enhance labor, and to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage.
