Vasopressin

Basic Description

Structure and function:
· Vasopressin is a 9-amino acid polypeptide hormone that is primarily secreted by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland.
Its main effects are to constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure by activating V1 receptors, and to increase water reabsorption by the kidneys and reduce urine production by activating V2 receptors.
In vitro and in vivo studies:
In vitro, vasopressin significantly increases the contraction of vascular smooth muscle.
In vivo, vasopressin is effective in increasing blood pressure and decreasing urine output.
In clinical applications, vasopressin is used to treat central diabetes insipidus and control bleeding.
